THE QUEST
Introduction
Just as we organize the items in our lives, scientists have organized all living things into groups. By investigating the characteristics of living things, scientists have classified all living things into 5 Kingdoms:
Monera
Protista
Fungi
Plantae
Animalia
The Task
JR. SCIENTISTS IN TRAINING NEEDED!
While on an exploration mission, scientists discovered a new island in the south Pacific. Several new species of living things have been discovered and the scientists need your help to assist in classifying the newly discovered living things.
Mission 1 - You and 4 other scientists will work together to become experts in the 5 Kingdoms of life. As scientists in training, one member of each group will investigate and become a professional on one of each of the 5 Kingdoms of life. Your group will share your collective knowledge with your classmates by creating a concept web (using the Inspiration software on your computer) that shows the key characteristics of each Kingdom. Use the links on the resources page provided to assist you with your research. Submit your completed concept map into the class assignment folder. Include your group number as part of the document name. (Refer to the Assessment page for the grading rubric)
Mission 2- Use your collective knowledge to collaborate and classify the new and unidentified living things found on the island into the Kingdoms of life. Visit the Unidentified Living Things page to view the organisms you are to classify in order help the scientists with their new discoveries. Be sure to identify at least 3 characteristics for each organism that identify it as belonging to the chosen Kingdom. Use the Document provided to record your findings. Submit your completed document to the class assignment folder. Include you group number as part of the document name. (Refer to the Assessment page for the grading rubric)
Mission 2 Recording Document
Mission 3- Create your own organism! This is an individual assignment. Each member of your group must complete this assignment independently. Using your knowledge of the 5 Kingdoms of life and your imagination, create a new living thing. Create a poster (either using a drawing program or by hand). The poster must include a detailed drawing of your organism and a detailed description of your organism including the characteristics that justify how it belongs to the Kingdom you have chosen. Please submit your finished product to the class assignments folder or into the science hand-in bin. Include you name as part of the document name. (Refer to the Assessment page for the grading rubric)
